Learning & Development Case Study

The LEGO Group

June 9th, 2021

Overview:

The globally renowned Lego Group is one of the world's leading manufacturers of toys and play materials. A family-owned business with a mission: to develop the builders of tomorrow. This mission requires constant innovation and effective change management to maintain its position. The company prides itself on a vibrant, internal network of innovation initiatives.

Challenge:

In an era of digital transformation, The LEGO Group’s management felt the need to improve its business capabilities, operational efficiencies, and ultimately, their customer experience. To achieve these changes, it was essential to prepare, equip and support their workforce with the tools needed to make the change a success. The company was seeking sources for innovation, inspiration, and knowledge exchange.

Solution:

The Global Exec., as the global connector of industries, had a series of meetings with LEGO Group representatives to understand the specifics of the challenge the company was facing. Our team was able to arrange a keynote speaker in a short period of time thanks to our large network of professionals. The speaker was the former Chairman & CEO of a multinational conglomerate who previously cultivated a company culture that accepted and encouraged innovation.

During the session, he shared his innovation expertise in the digital era via a virtual fireside chat. The session was fruitful and broke down the tricky steps that the conglomerate went through: the change in management, shifts in mindset and other displays of innovative inspiration. The key takeaway was how this could transfer and apply to the upcoming changes for the LEGO Group.

 Impact:

The LEGO Group realized how they tend to over-engineer even tiny obstacles on the innovation journey and were able to get a clearer idea of how external inspiration can lead to outside perspectives and fresh ideas.

The session sparked a wave of internal sharing among the LEGO Group employees who had been working remotely for quite some time. It was an active reminder about the key aspects of large-scale impactful innovation and how to achieve them.

“Gosh, we should organize such sessions regularly. There are great competencies and ideas inside the LEGO Group but guess what – way more outside of it! Our motto is: “The difference between invention and innovation is the implementation”. Therefore, meeting inspirational people regularly and learning from them is the only way forward.”

Lubos Maly, Global Director of Innovation in Operation, The LEGO Group
